Review of Jack Dagger: A Links Tale

I recently went on a family trip out to California. I think there were about 18 of us. Was very enjoyable with a couple of visits to wineries and was I lucky enough to play golf at Paso Robles Golf Club with my brother in law. Was slightly worried about the golf clubs making it from Illinois to California and back again but all worked out well.

While I noticed most passengers listen to downloaded music while on the some 4+ hour flight, I like to read a book. My choice this time around was Jack Dagger: A Links Tale. I had no idea what to expect of the book except I partially knew of Christo Garcia, the author and his YouTube channel where he seemed to tailor his golf swing after Ben Hogan. Ain’t nothing wrong with that.

I was also happy to add to my golf library where I was going to read a book of fiction, instead of usually having to hang on every single word and re-read what I may have missed. Else I would forever mess up my golf swing.

Jack Dagger: A Links Tale

Jack Dagger: A Links Tale

With Jack Dagger, I won’t give away any of the details but might tell you a slight bit about the man. Jackson Samuel Moore (Jack Dagger) was a former tour player trying to find his way knowing what he does best. Play golf. And he played golf very very well. He also had his miscue’s on the course and they were historic. He found himself falling on hard times. As go the ups, so go the downs. Still, he won 3 times on the PGA Tour and in the right circumstances, he could go low. 59 watch.

Except for his talent on the golf course, I think each and every one of us could see some of Jack in us. Moments that have you on a high and then being knocked back down to earth. Then wondering what you need to do to get back on track. Doing what you think is right only to be chastised by others. Relationships that work and then fall apart, due to no fault of your own. But then having friends who support you no matter what. Sometimes those friends might add to your detriment but they are also there to pick you up.

Then there are those times when out of the blue, someone who you might least expect giving a hand, does just that. You will find yourself rooting for Jack and you will also ask yourself why, more than a few times.

In so far as golf, Christo Garcia (author) describes different types of grasses and how the ball may roll on the green. Coming from Illinois, I wasn’t familiar with at least one of the grasses. The thought process on how Jack Dagger plays and attack a hole is a mindset that had me thinking about how I approach golf. You’ll learn a practice tip or two which you may be able to take to the golf course.

So as we approached Chicago to land at Midway, we started to circle the airport. Over and over again. Then the pilot got on the loudspeaker and said we were getting low on gas, weather would not allow us to land at the moment at Midway, so we were headed for Minneapolis. You could hear moans and groans amongst some of the passengers as well as the lady sitting one row behind who was saying, “why me”?

I had a different attitude. I was enthralled in this book and absolutely didn’t mind having the opportunity to have another couple hours of seeing where life would take Jack Dagger. About 200 pages into the book, we finally landed but I didn’t want to put the book down.

In the end, if you’re a golf fan looking for a heartwarming read, Jack Dagger: A Links Tale is a must-have and fun read.
