It seems a handful of years ago, amateur golfers started to take notice of the likes of Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, and Bryson DeChambeau because they were hitting bombs off the tee box with driver. Perhaps what made us take notice was Phil because he was getting on in age and Bryson because he was going through a body and swing transformation, yet all were hitting drives well in excess of 300 yards. I started to hear about how they were training and you could see the products in their golf bags. So I decided to do some research and see if these products were available for amateur golfers.
Ouch. The price. That was my first thought. So I did what I would normally do. Nothing… and then I made my own DIY swing speed trainer.
The only issue with my product is that it had one weight and in my head I knew I needed a multi-weight product. So I continued to research and found a no frills product with none of the added extras but everything I needed. The product is called the HH-Golf Swing Speed Trainer and comes at a fantastic price which allows your body to adapt to higher swing speeds and thus hit longer drives.
HH-Golf Swing Speed Trainer – The Price Is Right
So why did I purchase the HH-Golf Swing Speed Trainer over other models out there in the marketplace? Price. Yeah it all came down to price. This product can be purchased for approximately $40 when on sale whereas other swing speed trainers in the market were going for over $100 or well in excess of $200. I’ll say it right off the bat that if you want instructional videos or even an app with your swing speed trainer, you may want to check out some other offerings. Recommended devices include SuperSpeed Golf Swing Speed Training System, Rypstick Golf Distance Training System, and The Stack System.
So I picked up the HH-Golf Swing Speed Trainer at the end of last year. I checked out the above offerings and most seemed to be heavy on the pocketbook. Not HH-Golf. The reason why I wanted a swing speed trainer in general is because over the last few years I watched a couple of my friends hitting longer drives and I seemed to be losing distance. Bottom line is their shot into the green was sometimes 20+ yards less than what I had. One buddy in particular teed me off as he would say something to the effect, “my drive pissed all over yours as it flew by”. What my friends had on me was height which made for better leverage and usually a faster swing speed if that is how they chose to swing the club. More than that they sometimes played or practiced a few times per week. I did not have that luxury.
Keep Whining or Do Someting About It
Enough whining and time to get to work. My goal during the off-season was to get stronger, add flexibility, and get faster. The HH-Golf Swing Speed Trainer was going to be part of the equation and solution. HH-Golf offers a starting point of 240 grams, adding a middle weight gets you to 275 grams finally putting on the last weight will get you to 325 grams. For those who may not be aware, the average driver weighs approximately 310 grams. PGA touring professionals hit about 330 gram drivers on average. My driver was tipping the scales at 299 grams.
To understand the premise of overspeed training or using one of these golf swing speed trainers, the thought process is along the lines of this. Run 100 yards on a track and record your time. Tomorrow run 100 yards on a track with a 3 degree decline and record your time. If balance can be kept, the run with a 3 degree downhill decline should be quicker. If your body and muscles know they can do something quicker, not only your body but your mind will be more than happy to follow that path in the future.
Before we get started with the HH-Golf Swing Speed Trainer, sometimes you have to think on the other end of the spectrum. Where do you take most of your shots? Putting. So if you have the inclination and time, improve your putting by checking out the Devil Ball. It makes putting easier by making it more difficult. Anyway, read the article if you are interested.
Starting Point Swing Speed
Which brings us to back to this swing speed trainer. Always warm up plenty before ever attempting maximum swings with your clubs or this product. You start by recording your swing with a driver. Take half a dozen swings and take note of your quickest driver swing. Follow that up with a handful of swings at the max weight of the HH-Golf Swing Speed Trainer. In other words 325 grams and once again record your highest swing speed. Remove one weight and you are now at 275 grams. Take half a dozen swings and mark down the highest swing speed at 275 grams. Finally, remove the middle weight to where you are only left with the club at its 240 gram weight. Take a handful of swings and mark down the highest swing speed. Also, write down the date. Now you have a starting point.
I may not have what some see as the best equipment to measure speed but it is old and reliable in that most times I will get consistent readings. Yes, I need to purchase a better product to measure swing speed (most are radar based) but I have to make do with what I have. I have the Medicus Swing Speed Meter. Gasp. Please make recommendations on another swing speed meter. I’m currently looking at Sport Sensors Swing Speed Radar.
Update: Upon multiple recommendations, I purchased the PRGR Launch Monitor and found my true swing speed isn’t exactly what I thought it was. What I found was that although the Medicus Swing Speed Meter gave consistent results, the speed I thought I was swinging my driver and HH Golf Swing Speed Trainer was not the true speed I found I was getting with the PRGR Launch Monitor. And yes, the PRGR Launch Monitor is accurate.
I color code my HH-Golf Swing Speed Trainer. Not sure why but with the red on it is 325 grams, blue 275 grams, and green 240 grams.
My Starting Point with Driver and HH-Golf Swing Speed Trainer
Driver: 93.4mph
HH-Golf Swing Speed Trainer 325 grams: 101mph
HH-Golf Swing Speed Trainer 275 grams: 108mph
HH-Golf Swing Speed Trainer 240 grams: 116mph
Date 10/24/2022
Now the reason why the swing speed at the heaviest 325 gram weight is quicker than my 299 gram driver is simply because the mass of the driver head versus what you have on the swing speed trainer. But getting used to that faster speed is exactly what you want. At this point I need to set a goal. By the start of 2023 golfing season I would like to hit a driver speed of 101mph and a 240 gram top swing speed of 135mph.
With this product you will not find an instruction manual or an app. You won’t have access to coaches or a forum. We don’t need that. What you do need is a commitment of about 20 minutes or so two to three times a week. My recommendation is to do the training program below twice a week. Then once a week record your swing speed with driver, 325 gram weight, 275 gram weight, and finally the 240 gram weight. Make a goal of where you would like to be with driver after 8 weeks and 12 weeks.
Training Program
Warm up with an iron. Don’t wear yourself out but get nice and loose. I recommend about 20 swings with a 7 or 8 iron but you can choose any iron you would like. Hit some shots with a ball or just do what it takes to warm up. 20 swings and some light stretching. You wouldn’t go to the first tee without warming up? Right?
Warm up with a driver. Start with a swing of about 50% of your maximum with driver. Take 10 swings and gradually increase swing speed with each swing.
Get your HH Golf trainer. Take 5 swings at the 325 gram weight. Swing as you would normally swing with your driver (of course not hitting grass or a mat). So do the same setup, pretend you have a ball at the same place you normally would with driver while keeping the same stance and swing. Don’t hold anything back.
Switch Up Sides
Now turn to the opposite side. Yep, if you are a righty, you are about to swing as a lefty. Use that same HH Golf Trainer and 325 gram weight. Swing 5 times as a lefty and don’t hold anything back.
Now turn around as a righty again. Drop the weight on the HH Golf Trainer to 275 grams. Swing 5 times just as you would with the driver and don’t hold anything back. Switch up sides as a lefty with the 275 gram HH Golf Trainer and give it your all with 5 swings.
Finally, drop the weight to 240 grams. Swing 5 times as a righty and then 5 times as a lefty. Once again, don’t hold anything back but keep your form as you would when swinging with driver.
On Your Knees
Use the same 240 gram HH-Golf Swing Speed Trainer and get on your knees as a righty. Take 5 swings while attempting to keep some sort of form. Meaning don’t fall over. Switch sides and do the same as a lefty. I know this whole opposite side is really awkward but we are building up speed and muscle memory. If you can get good speed while on your knees over time, that speed will be all the more when taking a driver stance.
Last Set
Our final set will take us out of form but it will be like running downhill with a 10mph wind at your back. We call this the Happy Gilmore swing. Take out the 240 gram HH-Golf Swing Speed Trainer. Take a step back where your left foot touches your right foot and while you step forward and plant your left foot, take a full out swing. Do 5 swings as a righty and then 5 swings as a lefty. Whew. You are done! Now if this didn’t wear you out, you weren’t trying hard enough.
What Do I Think About HH-Golf Swing Speed Trainer?
Would I buy the HH-Golf Swing Speed Trainer again? Absolutely. Do I wish that I would have purchased an alternative such as SuperSpeed Golf Swing Speed Training System or maybe the Rypstick Golf Distance Training System? Possibly but I really don’t think either product would have gotten me to the end result quicker. For those who may need a forum, an app, or training videos then one of these latter devices may be the way to go. Personally, I like how quickly it is (just a few seconds) to change from one weight to another with the single club that HH-Golf uses.
What I like about the HH-Golf Swing Speed Trainer is that I never felt like I was going to break the product. For approximately $40 or so sometimes you aren’t sure what you are going to get. No regrets here. The grip felt solid and did not slip. My swing speed got up to about 128mph at the lightest 240 gram weight. I went through the entire 2022 winter offseason and golfing season while swing the speed trainer. I am starting to ramp up again in using for the 2023 season. The one negative is really not against the product itself but the fact that you do need to have a swing speed monitor (meter) of some sort if you want to keep track of results. It is my firm belief that if you don’t know where you currently are in regards to driver speed, how do you know where you want to get to. So having a swing speed monitor is a must.
2022 Golf Year Results
For me, the HH-Golf Swing Speed Trainer worked extremely well and that is because I kept with a program. I coupled this with practicing with my SkyTrak over the winter. All told I picked up an average of 15-20 yards on each drive, actually getting closer to 20 yards. The high point for me was reaching a long par 4 in two shots for the first time this year. Remember when my buddy was making fun of me as his ball was pissing on mine as his drive flew by? Well, I didn’t hear those words this year. In fact, more often than not we had equal drives or I out drove him.
Put Results In Writing
If you can read my writing below, you will see some starting point ball speeds on the left hand side and how they increased from 123mph max on March 1, 2022 to 140mph max in mid August 2022. Off to the far right on the chalkboard are just a few of the swing speeds I kept track of throughout the year with the swing speed trainer. Please note that these numbers on the right side are swing speed versus ball speed on the left hand side.
If in doubt, I would say give this product a chance. At its price point it is one of the cheaper golf training aids on the market and it rivals those costing in excess of $100 and $200. Find your starting point with swing speed using driver and follow the training program for a minimum of 8 weeks. Your golf muscles might just appreciate the continued use and when you pull out an 8 iron instead of a 6 iron on your approach to the green, you’ll have the HH-Golf Swing Speed Trainer to thank.
